A CERES bus figured in an accident in Barangay Poblacion, Sogod, Cebu last Thursday afternoon, wounding its 13 passengers and the conductor.
Insp. Romeo Caacoy, the town’s police chief, said the bus was driven by 42-year-old Junifer Coraraton.
The accident took place past 1 p.m. after the bus, owned by Vallacar Transit Inc., tried to avoid a motorcycle that had encroached into its lane.
The bus was heading to Tuburan when it encountered the Catmon-bound motorcycle.
Caacoy said the bus first hit the sign post of the town’s ticketing office, then plowed into a concrete fence and ended up toppling an electrical post.
Initial investigation showed Coraraton accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of on the brakes. “Wala may skid mark didto sa area kung ni-brake pa siya (There were no skid marks in the area had he applied the brakes),” Caacoy told Sun.Star Cebu.
The passengers and conductor, who sustained minor injuries, were rushed to the Juan B. Dosado Memorial Hospital.
PO3 Elymar Mendoza, investigator of the Sogod Police Station, identified the victims as Jojo Comahig, 49, of Tabuelan; Wilfredo Tuling, 60, of Tabuelan; Elmer Presbitero, 28, of Sogod; Aurora Curts, 35, of Catmon; Rowena Armecin, 58; Raquel Mainit, 36, of Tuburan; Robert Montañez, 35, of Tuburan; Maria Armamento, 62, of Sogod; Ivan Salo, 38, of Escalante City, Negros Occidental; Romulo Ducante, nine, of Tuburan; Jennelyn Romero, 27, of Mandaue City; Kingsley Romero, three, of Mandaue City; Rogelio Calero, legal age, of Liloan; and bus conductor Sergio Labostro, legal age, of Tuburan.
“Nakagawas ra dayon sila. Mga garas ug bun-og ra sa lawas ilang naangkon (There were immediately released from hospital. They only suffered scratches and minor bruises),” Mendoza told Sun.Star Cebu.
Coraraton of Tuburan was detained at the police station.
He may face complaints of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple physical injuries and damage to properties.
As of yesterday, Caacoy said they were still waiting for complainants to press charges against Coraraton.
They learned that the bus company will shoulder the medical expenses of the victims and had promised to fix the damaged properties.
