Arroyos propose discounts for single parents-A A +A
Saturday, July 19, 2014
A TEN percent discount on children’s clothing and a 15 percent discount on baby’s milk and food for the first two years are among the benefits for single parents being proposed in a bill by a mother and her son.
The proponents: Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her son, Camarines Sur Rep. Diosdado Arroyo.
“Our proposed amendments to Republic Act 8972 would expand the present coverage and benefits given to solo parents and make sure that the law’s lofty objectives are attained,” the younger Arroyo said, referring to the Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2000.
House Bill 2658 proposes additional benefits like a 15-percent discount on solo parents’ purchases of medicine and medical supplements for their children who are five years old and younger.
The current law, Diosdado noted, recognizes “the efforts and sacrifices that solo parents must endure in raising and rearing their children.”
The Arroyos are also proposing to amend the waiting period, for a person to be qualified as a solo parent, from one year to six months only.
Their bill also provides for the creation of an inter-agency coordinating and monitoring committee on the implementation of the law.
The proposed penalties for those who deny qualified solo parents the mandated benefits range from a fine of P10,000 and six months in jail, to a fine of P200,000 and two years in jail. (Sunnex)
