CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama wants the Tourist Police Unit (TPU) of Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) transferred.

The mayor was dismayed by the unit’s failure to prevent petty crimes, such as theft, in its area.

“I want them out of that area,” Rama told reporters.

The station is currently at the Plaza Sugbo in front of Cebu City Hall near the Magellan’s Cross and Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño.

The unit was placed in the area since it is near several tourist spots.

“I already warned them to perform their job and now they have to learn their lesson,” Rama said.

He said the TPU failed to prevent motorcycle carnapping in the past months.

Reports involving two incidents of motorcycle carnapping reached Rama’s office.

“It’s a shame on our part that there is a police station there, and yet we received reports of carnapped motorcycles,” Rama said.

A portion in front of City Hall near the tourist police station is used as parking spots for motorcycles.

Rama earlier was against the location of the office of the tourist police since it blocks the view of Cebu City Hall.

“It is not supposed to be there because it will just cover the beautiful city hall,” he said.

Following the mayor’s order, the Cebu City Government will place the new office of the tourist police in the soon-to-be-built Magellan’s Park, which will be behind the executive building, in between the Carbon Public Market and the Senior Citizen’s Park.

Right now, clearing works has been done in the area to pave the way for the public park.

Rama said the building will house city offices, including the city tourist police.

Considering that many tourists visit historical spots near the City Hall square, Rama advised the tourist police unit to strengthen its presence there.

Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Noli Romana welcomed Rama’s plan to transfer the Tourist Police Unit (TPU). He said the building has become an ‘eyesore’ in front of Cebu City Hall. “Noon pa namin ito pinag-uusapan. Mas mabuti din ito kasi dapat malinis tingnan ang front ng city hall,” Romana told Sun.Star Cebu. From what he knew, he said TPU will be transferred in Senior Citizen’s Park, making it more strategic.

“Mas madali na nilang ma-alarmahan ang mga incidents,” he said, adding the location is also accessible in Carbon Public Market and South Road Properties.
