A 16-YEAR-OLD girl took her life inside their house in the southern town of Alcoy, Cebu on Wednesday night.
Danica (not her real name) was found by her younger brother hanging in their room in Barangay Atabay past 8 p.m.
Insp. Crisanto Abella, the town’s police chief, said the girl may have become depressed after feeling neglected.
Danica and her two other siblings have been taking care of themselves for some time.
PO2 Earlan Salonoy, in a separate interview with Sun.Star Superbalita Cebu, said the children’s mother left them reportedly for another man when they were young.
Their father works as a chainsaw operator in Sibonga and would only go home to give them food allowance.
A suicide note was found by police below Danica. It said, “Ingat kayo pa at mga kapatid. I love you. I’m sorry. Dili na nako makaya (Take care pa and to my brothers. I can’t take it anymore).”
Initial investigation revealed Danica and her brother, 14, had dinner early that day. Her brother went to their neighbor’s house to watch television.
When the brother came back, he was shocked to see Danica hanging in a nylon. He then called their neighbors to ask for help.
A police team responded and brought Danica to Alcoy Rural Health Unit. Dr. Charisse Lariosa, the attending physician, declared her dead due to strangulation on arrival at the hospital.
Abella said they are now interviewing the girl’s family if they knew Danica had problems or was suffering from depression.
They are also checking the girl’s mobile phone if it contained messages that would give them lead as to why Danica committed suicide.
Teens are at risk of committing suicide because they encounter various emotional struggles, a psychiatrist from Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for Behavioral Sciences earlier told Sun.Star Cebu.
