THE 100 millionth Filipino was expected to be born at 12:06 a.m. today.

To commemorate this milestone, the Commission on Population (Popcom) 7 has established the search for the country’s “100th Million Baby” in the region.

In a statement, Popcom 7 Director Bruce Ragas said they are urging provinces, cities and towns to take part in the search. They have until Aug. 4 to report the birth.

Aim

“The purpose of the ‘Search for the 100th Million Baby’ is to call attention to the Philippine population growth and (that) the tiny baby is just one small part of our developing goal. He or she is a symbol of hope and a challenge to all institutions and every Filipino to count on each other to live in a healthy, productive and livable environment,” Ragas said.

Requirements

The search is open to all babies born at 12:06 a.m. or seconds or minutes later in a health facility run by the national government or a local government unit.

The facility must be certified as observing the Philippine Standard Time and the birth must be certified by a doctor or a birth attendant.

Only babies born through normal spontaneous delivery are qualified. Babies delivered through induced or C-section (caesarian) shall not be considered, Ragas added.

Ragas said there will be six regional winners from the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and Negros Oriental, one from a city in the region and another one from Metro Cebu.

The six regional winners will be part of 100 infants who will be chosen in different parts of the country.

Parents of all winners will receive a starter kit for newborns worth P5,000. (JKV)
