POLICE arrested a retired policeman after several explosives, firearms, and ammunition were found inside his residence in Barangay Talamban, Cebu City last Saturday.
Benjamin Bontilao Arconada, 65, was arrested by Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 7 operatives in his house in Sitio Kalubihan, Barangay Talamban last Saturday night.
The raid was conducted based on complaints received by CIDG 7 against the retired policeman.
Arconada frequently allegedly carries his unlicensed firearms outside and points them among civilians.
In an interview yesterday, Arconada said he had the firearms and explosives for safekeeping. He declined to comment further.
Arconada’s last assignment was with the Talamban Police Station before retiring in 2004.
Arconada was also a former member of the Philippine Constabulary.
The operation was led by CIDG 7 Deputy Chief Supt. Fermin Armendarez III and supported by a search warrant issued by Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Soliver Peras of Branch 10.
Before the raid, Arconada was placed under surveillance for a week to verify reports against him.
Armendarez said that based on their surveillance, Arconada keeps carrying a firearm for unknown reason.
Armendarez said they were surprised to see hand grenades and high-powered firearms inside Arconada’s house.
CIDG 7 also found out that Arconada’s firearms are not licensed after verification with the Firearms Explosive Security Guards and Agencies Supervisory Section (Fesagss).
Among the firearms confiscated from the suspect were a M14 baby Armalite rifle, two fragmentation grenades, two rifle profile grenades, six cuts of M16 barrels; 17 40mm high explosive rounds, eight-gauge shotgun bullets, 192 caliber 9mm pistol bullets, 114 caliber 35 bullets, 15 caliber 30 bullets, and assorted magazines.
Arconada will face charges of illegal possession of firearms. He is detained at the CIDG 7 stockade. JTR
