THE Talisay City Government has ordered the immediate evacuation of students and teachers from a public elementary school that was hit by landslides since last month.

Following recommendations from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Central Visayas, Talisay City Mayor Johnny De los Reyes tasked City Schools Division superintendent Woodrow Denuyo to come up with a program of works for the construction of new classrooms for the Manipis Elementary School.

De los Reyes said that due to recommendations from DENR’s Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the school has to be transferred to a safer place. The lot where it stands is considered highly susceptible to landslides, said DENR.

In a report, geologists from MGB 7 recommended the evacuation of the school after boulders that were moved by a recent landslide damaged a classroom.

The Manipis Elementary School has 300 students and faculty members.

Vince Monterde, Talisay City public information and local disaster risk reduction and management (LDRRM) officer, said that after receiving MGB’s recommendations, the mayor ordered Denuyo to prepare proposals to transfer the school to a safer place.

Monterde said funds for the construction of new classrooms will be sourced out from the City’s Special Education Fund (SEF).

But Monterde said that even though there is urgency in the matter, they cannot implement the transfer immediately because they have yet to identify an area to be the site of the new school.

De los Reyes has tasked Barangay Manipis chief Emma Cabiluna to look for an area.

De los Reyes also plans to send a city engineer to the school to check if they can still implement repairs on the damaged classroom.

De los Reyes aims to transfer the school to a new site by January next year. JKV
