ARRIVING from a three-week visit to the United States, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama yesterday announced he has secured pledges from Filipino communities in five states for the new Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC).

The pledges now total around P912.04 million, enough to pay for six floors out of the projected 10.

After City Hall allocated P300 million from its own coffers and raised P16 million in loose change, if all the pledges are delivered, the City will need to raise P271.9 million for the P1.5-billion hospital project.

“We’ve really been successful in getting pledges and securing commitments,” the mayor
said yesterday.

The City had to tear down the CCMC along N. Bacalso Ave. after the 7.2-magnitude earthquake last October left it too damaged and too unsafe to use.

In a news conference, the mayor said that the Filipino community in Las Vegas vowed to raise funds for the construction of the new hospital’s second floor.

The second floor alone may cost P162,249,900, based on the estimates made by Dr. Shawn Espina and Architect Mico Espina of the CCMC ad hoc committee. It will house the outpatient departments, the animal bite center, dental center, heart center and laboratory.

As for the third floor, Rama said that the Filipino communities in Houston will raise funds for it.

The third floor will cost P166,580,700, and will have the administration offices, department offices, board rooms, dietary section, the medical records section,
director’s office, nurses’ offices, doctors’ offices and the auditorium, among others.

For the fifth floor, Rama said it will be taken care of by Filipinos in Seattle.

The fifth floor will cost P170,741,750 and will have the intensive care unit, geriatric ward, burn unit, religious spaces and stroke unit, among others.

The sixth floor will be handled by the Filipino community in Salinas, California.

Its construction will cost P100.6 million and it will house more wards, isolation rooms and private rooms. The same estimate applies to each level from the seventh to the 10th floors.

The total cost of the construction of a new hospital, which will be a 10-storey, 400-bed facility, is pegged at P1.5 billion.

Offer from SM

As for the first floor, Rama disclosed that SM Prime Holdings Inc. President Hans Sy has vowed to shoulder the cost of its construction.

Its cost is P116.6 million and it will house the emergency rooms for surgery, pediatrics, internal medicine and obstetrics, as well as the laboratory, pharmacy and admitting section.

The fourth floor, the mayor said, will be taken care of by Operation Smile, a non-profit humanitarian and medical relief organization.

Its construction will cost P195,269,300. It will have the endoscopy unit, the operating room and the central supply room.

Lastly, Rama said that the Filipino community in San Diego will also help raise funds for the new CCMC.

Rama said he will be in constant communication with those he met in the US in order to follow up on their pledges. He that added some of them will visit in January next year to attend the Sinulog celebration and see the CCMC project.

As for the P300 million that the City has already set aside for the construction of a new hospital and the P16 million from the Piso Mo, Hospital Ko fund drive, Rama said these funds will be used for the first phase of the project, the hospital’s foundation.

Construction is expected to start in October.
