NINETEEN kilos of what is believed to be thresher shark meat were confiscated yesterday afternoon by the Cebu Provincial Anti-illegal Fishing Task Force in Sitio Sangi, Barangay Tubigag Manok in Asturias.

Capitol chief security officer Loy Madrigal, also head of task force, the meat was sold by Sene Deblosan for P40 per kilo.

He said he and his team chanced upon Deblosan on their way back to Cebu City after an operation. The thresher shark was caught allegedly by a fisherman identified only as Peter of Barangay Labangon in Asturias.

The shark, according to the task force’s initial investigation, was caught by accident.

Ordinance

Madrigal said Deblosan turned over the shark meat to the task force without resistance.

Thresher sharks, an endangered species, are protected by a provincial ordinance.

Madrigal said they will not file a case against Deblosan and the fisherman as both were not aware of the ordinance. He said he advised the vendor not to sell shark meat again.

Madrigal said the task force will continue to monitor Asturias to check if the selling of shark meat is a common practice.

Examination

He said the task force will keep the shark meat for examination by a marine biologist. It will be donated after to the laboratory of certain schools.

Madrigal stressed the need to raise awareness about wildlife protection and nature conservation, especially in remote areas.

He urged the public to report to their barangay, police and municipal and city officials if they know someone caught sharks or any wildlife.

He said marine wildlife that are caught or stranded should be returned to sea if these are still alive.
