A CEBU City councilor wants the City Government to spend P3.5 million for a welcome dinner to 5,000 lawyers who will be in the city on March 2015 to attend a three-day national convention.
Councilor Hanz Abella, in a proposed resolution, said hosting the dinner is the least the City can do being the venue of the 15th National Convention of Lawyers organized by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP).
The convention will be held on March 20 to 22 next year at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
Based on Abella’s one-page resolution, the City will have to spend P700 per delegate for the welcome dinner.
“Such a dinner is the least the City, as the host city, can do for those delegates or participants who can be potential tourists or investors in our beloved city,” the councilor said.
The P3.5 million needed for the activity is being proposed by Abella to be included in the City’s proposed annual budget for 2015.
Abella’s resolution is also an offshoot to the request of IBP-Cebu Chapter President Erwin Rommel Heyrosa for the City to host a welcome dinner for all the country’s lawyers.
“The chapter committed to make the upcoming convention a big success not only for the sake of the legal profession in the country, but to showcase the Cebuano’s excellence and beauty of Cebu as well. However, the cooperation and support from the City is necessary in this endeavor,” said Heyrosa in a letter dated May 22.
During the City Council’s regular session last Wednesday, Abella’s resolution was referred to the committee on budget and finance headed by Councilor Margarita Osmeña for report and recommendation.
It was also referred to the City’s local finance committee for appropriate action.
The request for a P3.5 million budget for the dinner already has the approval of Mayor Michael Rama.
The mayor has already requested City Budget Officer Marietta Gumia to include the amount in the proposed 2015 annual budget of the City.
