STAY fit and don’t get fat. If you’re overweight or pot-bellied, you have six months to get in shape.

This was Mayor Michael Rama’s message to all traffic enforcers of Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) when he met with them last Thursday to remind them of them the importance of having a healthy well-being, particularly when performing their task in the streets.

“They are exposed to the public, they really have to look good,” Rama said, adding that those who fail to lose weight will be transferred to other City Hall offices.

The mayor said traffic enforcers need to be fit especially that the City will be hosting major activities such as the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in 2015 and International Eucharistic Congress in 2016.

During the six-month period, traffic enforcers and all other City Hall employees will be made to enroll in sports activities or fitness programs under the Cebu City Sports Commission, as stated in a memorandum issued by City Administrator Lucelle Mercado.

Citom personnel welcomed this development, with operations officer Jonathan Tumulak himself admitting that he is one of those who needs to stay fit.

“It will be a big challenge but we welcome it,” he said.

At present, Tumulak said 40 percent of their personnel are pot-bellied and considered overweight.

“It will really help us because if we are too heavy, we cannot perform our tasks well,” he added.

After the meeting, Tumulak said Citom has already initiated different exercise activities for all its personnel.

Also during the same gathering, Mayor Rama announced that he is planning to reduce the numbers of traffic enforcers to 150.

Of the 200 estimated current total number of enforcers, Rama said only 75 percent of them will continue serving, while some parking aides will be made enforcers.

“Their performance will be under evaluation,” he said.
