Police are still searching for the gunman, who fled on board a motorcycle.

Senior Insp. Wilbert Parilla, chief of the Gun-ob Police Station, said Melodia went out to buy a cigarette around 1:40 a.m. when he noticed a man loitering near the station on G. Mangubat St.

Melodia approached the man and invited him to the station. When he held the suspect, the latter took out an unidentified caliber of firearm and shot him.

The bullet hit Melodia in the lower back and exited his shoulder.

Parilla said the police officer, who was brought to the Mactan Doctors’ Hospital, needs to undergo a surgery.

Parilla said Melodia temporarily resides in the substation and was off duty when the incident happened.
