AN Alcoy councilman was charged with murder yesterday for the death of the town's police chief, Insp. Crisanto Abella 44.

Sixty-eight-year-old Florencia Abella, the victim's mother, sat on a plastic chair between the prosecutor and her eldest son, Crisologo, during the filing of the murder complaint.

She kept her head bent and remained silent.

Florencia would not look at Ciriaco de los Santos, the Barangay Poblacion councilor who allegedly shot dead her younger son last Sunday night.

As Prosecutor Ethel Miel took Florencia's oath citing the authenticity of her affidavit, the handcuffed de los Santos was just tapping his fingers.

"I cannot forgive him. What we want is justice," said a teary-eyed Florencia in an interview.

Crisologo shared the same sentiment.

We seldom see each other. I really took care of him when he was still a child and now somebody just killed him)," said Florencia.

The upside to all this is the camaraderie shown by the men and women of the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO).

CPPO donated P56,000 yesterday to Insp. Abella's family.

Whether they knew Insp. Abella or not, the commanders of the different police station and their respective personnel raised funds to provide financial assistance to the family left behind by the official.

“We saw that they are in a difficult situation so we decided to help. We want the family to feel that we are just here even if our comrade is not,” said CPPO Director Noel Gillamac.

Gillamac and some of the CPPO cops turned over the money past 1 p.m. to Insp. Abella's family at the fallen officer's wake in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City.

"We are happy that he had not been forgotten,” she told Sun.Star Cebu.

Insp. Abella also left behind a live-in partner for five years. They had no children.

Insp. Abella had been in service for almost 15 years and would have turned 45 on Dec. 16.

Ironic

Crisologo said it was ironic a .45 caliber pistol was used to end Insp. Abella's life at 44.

Insp. Abella will be laid to rest on Sept. 6 at the Calamba Public Cemetery.

PO3 Emilio Carungay, chief investigator of the Alcoy Police Station, said the police station is now different without the chief.

“We're really affected but we have to continue working,” Carungay said in a phone interview.

CPPO already sent Alcoy Mayor Nick de los Santos three names of police officers who will replace Abella.

They are Insp. Priscilo Roble, Insp. Andres Alpas and Insp. Rodgene Fudotan.

As of yesterday, Gillamac said he is still waiting for the mayor's decision.

De los Santos was charged with murder before the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor yesterday morning.

Throughout the inquest proceeding, the suspect kept his mouth shut and allowed his lawyer to do the talking.

Right

De los Santos availed of his right to a preliminary investigation and will file a counter-affidavit.

Before Abella succumbed to gunshot wounds, the police official led his team in patrolling the town gym, where a boxing event was held as part of the pre-fiesta celebrations.

According to police investigation, de los Santos allegedly invited Abella to have a beer with him.

Abella reportedly obliged because they were friends.

The conversation centered on what Abella was doing against unscrupulous men pretending to be police officers and harassing some vendors in Barangay Nug-as.

The two had an argument, allegedly prompting de los Santos to shoot the police official.
