A 23-YEAR-OLD education student attempted to commit suicide inside the Talisay City College (TCC) in Barangay Poblacion just before noon yesterday.
In Cebu City, a man believed to be suffering from a nervous breakdown attempted to jump off a five-story building on V. Rama Ave. past 5 p.m. yesterday.
In the Talisay incident, Paul (not his real name), a resident of Sitio Crusher, Barangay Lawaan 3, attempted to kill himself by slashing his throat with a small blade inside a vacant room inside the school.
Although he lost a lot of blood, he survived after he was brought to the Talisay City District Hospital.
Investigators said that Paul’s suicide attempt stemmed from a recent argument that he had with his mother.
PO1 Ranulfo Villaver, the investigator on the case, told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that around 11 a.m. yesterday, he suddenly left his classroom and went to the vacant room.
Using a small razor blade, he reportedly slashed his throat.
Luckily, another student found Paul, lying on a pool of blood. He called his teachers and other students to ask for help.
Paul was brought to the Talisay City District Hospital, where he is recovering.
Villaver said that his wound is so deep that he can no longer speak.
Based on his investigation, Villaver said the student tried to kill himself after he was scolded by his mother for hitting his younger brother with a pillow.
Before that, he was also scolded by his mother after he asked for money for his projects.
After he learned about the incident, Talisay City Mayor Johnny De los Reyes said he plans to tighten security at the TCC.
De los Reyes, also the acting president of the local college, advised students not to commit drastic actions like trying to kill themselves.
“If you have financial problems, we can solve that. Just don’t take your own life because of it,” he told the students.
In Barangay Calamba, Cebu City, Marlon (not his real name), a resident of Mandaue City, was running errands with his mother when he started acting in a strange way.
Marlon reportedly kept saying that someone wants to shoot him.
He would also look for her mother even when she is right beside him.
Security personnel thought they could calm him down with the help of his mother, but efforts to restrain him failed.
People in the area began to worry when Marlon suddenly went up the fifth floor of the building and stood in front of a window, reportedly looking like he wanted to jump.
He reportedly said that he wanted to seek the help of police so they could save him from the people who want to kill him.
Cliffex Alvarez, a resident in the area, said he saw Marlon near the window looking like he was about to jump off the building.
Even after Guadalupe Police Station personnel led by SPO4 Carlito Lirazan arrived, Marlon still did not calm down.
This forced officials to tackle Marlon, then handcuff him.
Marlon was brought to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center’s Psychiatric Ward and is now under observation.
The police have yet to decide if they will file a complaint against Marlon, who is said to have a mental problem. JKV/USJ-R Intern Andrea Chua
