AN afternoon fire destroyed a two-storey apartment in Arlington Pond, Barangay Sta. Cruz, Cebu City yesterday.
The Cebu City Fire received the fire alarm at 5:25 p.m. and placed it under control at 5:43 p.m.
The apartment was reportedly owned by Daisy Patalinghug.
Fire Investigator Lowel Opolenticima said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Firefighters raised the blaze to second alarm, requiring all fire stations in Cebu City to respond.
Firefighters estimated some P60,000 worth of properties were damaged.
The two-storey apartment had six rooms and was reportedly made of light materials.
Opolenticima said the firefighters surrounded the area and prevented the fire from spreading. The apartment is located at the back of a restaurant.
Firefighters had to climb the roof of the restaurant in fighting the fire.
The restaurant’s firewall prevented the fire from spreading to nearby houses.
Celia Reyes, 23, one of the tenants of the apartment, said she was awakened by a thick smoke in her room. She checked out and saw the fire already spreading in the second floor.
No one hurt
“Nidagan ko dayon. Nagtuo ko og gadamgo ko kay naalimungawan man ko (I thought I was just dreaming),” said Reyes.
No one was hurt during the incident.
Fuente Police Chief Wildemar Tiu sent five policemen to secure the area.
He suggested that apartments and boarding houses should have fire safety equipment.
“I am planning to meet with the barangay captains in different areas. In cooperation with the fire department, all boarding houses should be inspected,” said Tiu.
He said that aside from the fire safety equipment, the barangay should check if the apartments have barangay permits.
