A MAN was caught in the act of stealing wires from a traffic light at the corner of S. Osmeña Blvd. and Gen. Maxilom Ext., Cebu City last Monday afternoon.
A traffic enforcer of the City Operations Traffic Management (Citom) chanced upon Helbert Reynes, 31, allegedly removing about P45,000 worth of wires from the control box of the traffic light.
The traffic lights in the area were destroyed when thieves stole about P500,000 worth of wires. The thieves also destroyed more than P2 million worth of traffic lighting equipment.
Helbert Reynes, 31, was brought to the Theft and Robbery Section (TRS) of the Cebu City Police Office.
Sr. Insp. David Señor, head of the TRS, said Reynes was not among the five suspects who took the traffic light wires last month.
Joy Tumulak, Citom operations chief, said the theft, which occurred in Barangays Carreta and Tejero, was raised to the Police Coordinating and Advisory Council (PCAC).
Tumulak said PCAC met with concerned barangay captains and police stations to discuss how to prevent future theft.
Señor almost 30 meters of wire was confiscated from Reynes, who allegedly placed the cable in a sack.
Señor said Reynes had a companion who ran away after noticing the Citom enforcer approaching.
The wires are reportedly sold by Reynes for P200 per meter.
