MOTORISTS will not be able to pass through the tunnel on the Cebu South Coastal Road from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. today.

The tunnel will be closed to allow the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the City’s Department of Public Services (DPS) to clear the roads in the tunnel of mud that accumulated there after the flood last week.

The City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) announced the closure yesterday afternoon.

“The gutter is no longer visible because of the mud that accumulated inside the tunnel. It poses danger to motorists so we really have to clean it,” said Joy Tumulak, operations division chief of Citom.

Motorists going to southern Cebu were advised to enter the Cebu South Coastal Road through the entrance of the South Road Properties at the back of Cebu City Hall.

North-bound motorists coming from the south can go out of the coastal road through the exit beside the Malacañang sa Sugbo.

Tumulak said that 10 Citom personnel will be deployed to direct traffic at the entry and exit points of the tunnel.

By 3 a.m., sweepers from DPWH will start cleaning the tunnel with the help of the Bureau of Fire Protection, which will lend a fire truck to wash off the mud.

The Cebu South Coastal Road and the tunnel are maintained by the DPWH.
