PRO to verify cop official who 'protects' drug lord

Wednesday, August 31, 2016

THE Police Regional Office (PRO)-Central Visayas will validate the information that a police official in Central Visayas is reportedly protecting suspected drug lord Kerwin Espinosa, the son of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr.

Chief Supt. Noli Taliño, the PRO 7 director, said they will investigate the report, which came out after Mayor Espinosa issued an affidavit, naming his son’s protectors.

The police official said he has not received information about it.

Kung may ebidensiya, kasama yan sa iba-validate natin (If there’s evidence, it will be validated as well),” Taliño told reporters yesterday.

Last week, Mayor Espinosa was sheltered in the Albuera Police Station, after executing an affidavit that identifies the media practitioners, law enforcers and politicians allegedly involved with Kerwin’s illegal drug trafficking activities.

The mayor now stays in a room beside the office of Albuera Police Chief Jovie Espenido for his safety after he received death threats.

Espinosa surrendered to Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa last Aug. 2, after President Rodrigo Duterte named him and Kerwin as the major drug traders in the Visayas.

Kerwin is still in hiding and is said to be in Malaysia.

Espenido said he told Espinosa to name the protectors in exchange for letting the latter stay in the police station.

Raid

Last Aug. 10, eight days after his surrender, the police raided Espinosa’s house and found at least P88 million worth of shabu. The mayor is facing criminal complaints before the prosecutor’s office.

Protector

Last July, dela Rosa said an official in Central Visayas reportedly received P200,000 from a drug lord per week.

Dela Rosa did not identify the police official.

The recent matrix released by Malacañang includes Senator Leila de Lima as the main protector of the illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City when she was still the justice secretary under former president Benigno Aquino III.

Last Aug. 7, Duterte named Supt. Romeo Santander and seven other officers as drug protectors. These officers were already relieved from their posts and were transferred to Camp Crame.
