CEBU CITY (Updated) -- Organizers of the Sinulog festival 2017 cancelled the repeat performance of the top five winning contingents due to bad weather Monday, January 16.
The formal awarding of trophies and cash prizes pushed through, though, but was held not at the grandstand but at the Cebu City Sports Center gymnasium.
The cancellation was done due to heavy rains, and "as per advice by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmena."
"This is for the safety of the performers," said the Sinulog Foundation on Facebook.
In his speech during the awarding Monday, Mayor Osmeña thanked everyone who helped make the Sinulog celebration a success. He also mentioned how grateful he is for the Cebuanos being open-minded and diverse.
Osmeña said he called off the repeat performance for the sake of the performers' health.
The contingents that are supposed to perform Monday are the Hugpong Asturiasnon of Municipality of Asturias; Lumad Basakanon of Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City; Dumaguete City's Sandurot Festival; Tribu Katbalaugan of Catbalogan City, Samar; and Lanao del Norte, The Land of Beauty and Bounty for the Free Interpretation category.
For Sinulog-based category, the top 5 winning contingents are Talisay City Central Elementary School; Municipality of Tuburan, Cebu; Talisay City Central Elementary School; DepEd Danao Youth Cultural Troupe of Danao City; Carcar City Division, Carcar City, Cebu; and Tangub City's Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe.
