Danao mayor steps down from office

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

DANAO City Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III has stepped down from office to serve a three-month suspension the Office of the Ombudsman handed him.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) served the suspension order last March 15.

Durano’s lawyer Edmund Lao said the mayor has given in to the suspension, saying it is brief and filing a motion for reconsideration with the anti-graft office will only delay the case’s resolution.

In fact, says Lao, they have withdrawn the motion for reconsideration from the Ombudsman and instead filed a petition for review at the Court of Appeals (CA) last March 9. That, so that they won’t be accused of forum- shopping.

The petition for review still questions Durano’s suspension.

The suspension is in relation to a case of neglect of duty after the mayor reportedly failed to implement a Civil Service Commission decision to reinstate some employees, whose appointments and payment of back wages he recalled.

Vice Mayor Mix Durano, who is the mayor’s son, will take his father’s place while the latter serves his suspension. AZDL of Superbalita
