Drug suspect killed in accidental firing in Minglanilla

Thursday, August 03, 2017

A SUSPECTED drug user died after he was accidentally shot by a police officer in Sitio Bacay, Barangay Tulay, Minglanilla, Cebu on Wednesday afternoon, August 2.

Winston Churchill Soriano Roldan, 30, a motorcycle-for-hire driver, was hit in the abdomen when he was grappling with Police Officer 1 Golem Cañada and the latter’s gun went off.

The slug tore through, exiting at the left portion of his waist.

Minglanilla Police Chief Dexter Calacar said Roldan was a drug surrenderer last year.

Before the incident, Calacar said they received a trouble alarm involving Roldan and his estranged wife Jennifer, a public school teacher.

Roldan allegedly brought a bolo at Jennifer's house. He often hurt her in the past and often threatened her if she refused to give money.

"Paranoid na kay sige na mi og alarma niya kay manakit na sa asawa (He’s becoming paranoid seeing as we always gave him warnings since he’s hurting his wife)," Calacar said.

Police had arrested Roldan after Jennifer complained that he often hurt her, but she later withdrew the charges.

In the Wednesday's incident, Golem and Senior Police Officer 1 Francisco Salubre were dispatched.

When they arrived in Bacay, Roldan resisted arrest and assaulted Golem. He then grabbed the pistol of the police officer, who held on to the firearm.

They fell and the gun went off twice. Roldan, who was hit on the second gun burst, was rushed to Minglanilla District Hospital, where he was declared dead. (SunStar Cebu)
