Espino defends drug war, says it's not anti-poor

Wednesday, October 04, 2017

THE head of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 denied that the government’s war on drugs is anti-poor.

Chief Supt. Jose Mario Espino said his operatives caught not just the poor drug suspects, but neutralized high-value targets.

“We also arrested police personnel involved in illegal drugs,” he said.

A non-commissioned survey last June of Social Weather Stations showed that 60 percent of 1,200 Filipino adults agreed that rich drug personalities are spared in the government’s war on drugs, while the poor are killed.

Twenty-three percent of the respondents disagreed while 17 percent are undecided.

Espino said he often reminds his personnel to respect the rights of the suspects.

His operatives, he said, will only retaliate if their targets would attempt to shoot at them.

Espino said they are still investigating the unsolved murders of suspected drug personalities in the region. (KAL)
