NEWLY-APPOINTED Cebu City Councilor Renato “Junjun” Osmeña assumed office yesterday after he received the certified true copy of his appointment signed by President Rodrigo Duterte and took his oath of office.

In a news conference yesterday before his oath taking, Junjun said he wanted to focus on peace and order and transportation, particularly on traffic.

“I want to handle that two committees because that’s the committees that people don’t want to accept. I want that challenge, everything now is chaotic and what I want here is to find solution and not blaming,” he told reporters.

However, the administration councilors are currently handling the chairmanships of the committees in the City Council.

Councilor Raymond Garcia of Barug Team Rama said that if he had his way, he wants the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) councilors to handle all the committees this year.

“I don’t want to rock the boat as of the moment. The year is almost over and we will have regular reorganization by July 1 of each year. We will just wait, however, we are a party and whatever the decision of the party, it will rule,” he said.

The City Council might have a new majority next year but Garcia said they’re not yet the majority because they’re equal in numbers with BOPK after Councilor James Anthony Cuenco was ordered dismissed by Ombudsman.

Councilor Joel Garganera agreed to the matter, saying what the Council needs is unity.

Meanwhile, asked what he will do first once he join other councilors in the session next week, Junjun said he will have to observe first on how they function.

While serving the City, Junjun also wants the City to run as though in a corporate structure and all the services will be professionalized following his experience in the corporate world.

Aside from being a businessman, Junjun also spent 23 years at the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor).

Although he is nephew of Mayor Tomas Osmeña and his group belongs to the opposition, Junjun said their relationship won’t affect his official function and stand in the City Council. (RVC)
