Capitol’s Sinulog float to highlight villages’ unity

Friday, January 12, 2018

THE Cebu Provincial Government will be attending this year’s Sinulog grand parade using a balangay-inspired float.

The float, which was designed by the Provincial Tourism Office (PTO), will signify unity among the barangays in Cebu Province.

Boboi Costas, PTO head, said they designed the float based on the concept of the barangay, which originated from the word “balangay.”

“As the basic unit in our community, a barangay perfectly stands for unity. It is the governing body that goes to the grassroots level, thus, forming unity toward progress,” Costas said in an interview.

The balangay was a wooden boat used by the pre-Hispanic Filipinos for trade and travel, among others.

To help enliven the float, Costas said that pre-colonial characters will be present.

During last year’s grand parade, the Capitol presented a float showcasing the plant and animal species endemic to Cebu.

Gov. Hilario Davide III said he and other local officials will be accompanying the float during the grand parade. (JKV)
