‘Keep the city clean during Sinulog 2018’

Friday, January 12, 2018

“MANY hands will not only make work light, but also help keep a clean Cebu City.”

This is what Mayor Tomas Osmeña highlighted in his speech during yesterday’s launching of the 2018 Sinulog celebration.

The mayor expressed his gratitude to all the volunteers who pledged to help make this year’s Fiesta Señor celebration safe and peaceful.

“There are thousands of volunteers who have done their work to make it successful and to make it peaceful. Let us hope that it will turn out that way. So many people, so many sponsors, so many sacrifices, and so many pilgrims are coming here. You cannot imagine the sacrifices they make,” he said.

Osmeña believes that the spirit of volunteerism and camaraderie among spectators and Cebuanos will help secure the success of the Sinulog grand parade on Jan. 21.

Osmeña, who also sits as chairman of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI), said that for this year, the organizers have prepared a “big production comparable to Hollywood movie sets.”

But despite the grand stage and world-class performances, the mayor said that what matters most is keeping the celebration child-friendly.

“Please cooperate. Tell your friends, let’s keep the city clean. We hope that when this is over, we can look forward to make more improvements during the next Sinulog,” he said.

The call for camaraderie and active community participation was shared by Msgr. Roberto Alesna, who officiated the holy mass sponsored by the City Government prior to the opening salvo.

He told the massive crowd of pilgrims to remember that their devotion would all go to waste if there is no intention to apply it in real life.

“Devotion without action is empty. We should have good attitudes, values and goals in our lives. It is impossible to encounter God without the encounter affecting the way of our lives,” Alesna said.

“In Cebu City, the problem we are facing is not only of the government, but ours as well. Problems on traffic, trash and flooding are ours to address and help solve. Let us all pour our resources and act as one family of God,” he added. (RTF)
