BOHOL Provincial Board (PB) Member Niño Rey Boniel is now detained at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) while the trial of his cases for kidnapping and serious illegal detention is ongoing.
Lawyer Inocencio dela Cerna, one of Boniel’s lawyers, said the Provincial Board member arrived at the CPDRC from Talibon, Bohol past 1p.m. yesterday afternoon.
Dela Cerna said the transfer of Boniel’s detention came after the Supreme Court en banc approved the request of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre and the camp of the late Bien Unido Mayor Gisela Bendong-Boniel to have the cases transferred from Bohol to Cebu.
Judge Ann Lou Fernandez-Cavada of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 57 will try the cases against Boniel and his co-accused in Cebu City.
The High Court granted the petition of the victim’s family to transfer the hearing of the kidnapping and serious illegal detention cases to prevent the accused from influencing potential witnesses.
Likewise, Gisela’s camp is offering a P200,000 reward to anyone who could provide information to authorities that would lead to the arrest of the board member’s co-accused, Lobo Boniel and Allan delos Reyes Jr.
Lobo and delos Reyes, who remain at-large, stand trial for Gisela’s murder along with Boniel and four others before the RTC in Cebu City.
The victim’s family said the bounty is P100,000 for each person.
Cavada earlier rejected Boniel’s plea to have the two criminal cases against him consolidated and be jointly heard in Bohol.
The defense would’ve wanted to consolidate the cases to expedite the proceedings and “eliminate the risk to his life brought about by the travel from Talibon to Cebu City, and vice-versa.” (GMD)
