A MAN from Alegria town, Southern Cebu was killed when a toppled coconut tree fell on his hut just as Tropical Depression Basyang battered the province on Tuesday night.
Jenas Demecillo Allones, 57, is the first reported casualty following Basyang's entry to Cebu Province Tuesday.
Julius Regner, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) information officer, said Allones was reportedly sleeping inside his house in Barangay Madridejos at 11 p.m. last night when strong winds brought by Basyang battered Alegria.
Unknown to Allones, a coconut tree growing outside his house was starting to give way due to the strong winds.
As it finally gave way, the coconut tree fell directly on Allones' hut, pinning him.
Neighbors who were able to rescue Allones immediately brought him to the St. Peter's Hospital in Barangay Poblacion, Alegria.
But Allones died an hour after he was brought to the hospital.
Regner said the Cebu Provincial Government will provide burial and financial assistances to Allones' family. (JKV/SunStar Cebu)
