Local promoter not surprised

THE collapse of the negotiations for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight isn’t a surprise for ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer because he believes Mayweather really had no intention of fighting Pacquiao.

“Honestly speaking I had a feeling this would never happen,” Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu.

Aldeguer pointed out that Mayweather ducked big fights with some of the elite boxers like Shane Mosley, Paul Williams and Miguel Cotto.

He also fought an aging Oscar de la Hoya in 2007 when he could have faced him earlier when the five division world champion was still at his prime.

“Mayweather hasn’t proven really that he has faced the best,” said Aldeguer.

Aldeguer feels that Mayweather demanded an Olympic-style drug-testing to use as a tactic to escape a difficult fight against the 31-year-old Pacquiao.

“Pacquiao has always been a clean fighter. He is being accused by Mayweather of something that he never did,” said Aldeguer. “The point is, Mayweather doesn’t really want to fight Pacquiao.”

On the other hand, Sammy Gello-ani is disappointed.

“It’s a waste because everybody wanted this fight,” said Gello-ani. “I hope that in the near future they can renegotiate. It’s a waste they are two of the best fighters in the world.”

Pacquiao is settling for former world champion Joshua Clottey as his next opponent on March 13 in Las Vegas; however, both Aldeguer and Gello-ani believe that the Filipino deserves better opposition.
