Lovin’ Hong Kong

A LOT of people I know, love Hong Kong. I mean, what’s not to love about it? The appeal of great shopping, amazing food and fun recreational activities is simply irresistible.

To me, it is a city of contrasts, since it is a rich, densely populated, modern city, with an overwhelming vista of skyscrapers along the harbor, yet, one can still see traces of the olden days in quiet, sleepy villages. Almost everywhere you look, there are huge western influences seen in fashion, trends and technology, yet somehow, locals have found a way to preserve what is truly Oriental in their everyday way of life.

But for a place that is so near to the Philippines, it certainly is no wonder why many tend to make their great escape to this wonderful city.

Places to visit

Hong Kong is not extremely huge, but trying to see and do everything in a matter of a few days can be a challenge, so let me try to point out some interesting sites.

For me, the most interesting landmark would be Victoria Peak. From there, you get a good impression of the city of Hong Kong. You can get there via the Tram Peak and once there, there is a Peak Circle Walk that gives you breathtaking views of the city below.

More information can be found at http://www.thepeak.com.hk

A bit away from the city center, on the island of Lantau, is the Tian Tan Buddha which is the the world’s largest seated bronze Buddha. The Po Lin Monastery, Ngong Ping village and the Wisdom path are also found within the vicinity.

The highlight for me would be a visit to the districts of Central, Kowloon, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. Take a ride on the famous Star Ferry, to take great pictures of the Hong Kong skyline.

For the young at heart, the amusement parks of Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park would be a thing one should not miss when in Hong Kong.

Outdoor enthusiasts need not fret for there is something for them too. Activities such as hiking, biking, camping and everything in between are recommended in websites such as this, http://www.hkoutdoors.com.

Dining

I know of friends who make trips to Hong Kong just to enjoy the cuisine, and after sampling a few restaurants, I can understand why. Try reading more about hot spots to dine in at this website, http://www.eatdrinkhongkong.com.

Shopping

This is one activity that locals and tourists can never get enough of, shopping. Hong Kong practically has it all, from the big, luxurious malls to the busy, hectic flea markets.

There is almost everything for everyone in this shopper’s paradise, so do a bit of research here to find out what you may need,

Important facts

Don’t forget to take note of some important facts that you need to know about the city, such as telephone numbers and hotlines of the police, hospitals, banks, credit
card companies, ports, airport, bus stations and the tourist office.

Whether you have a weekend or a longer holiday, Hong Kong will always be a place where many Filipinos go to for fun, relaxation and even refuge. I wish you a safe travel to this vibrant and lively city.
