MMA legend to visit Cebu

MIXED-martial arts legend Royce Gracie will be further promoting the surging martial art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Cebu City as he stops over here as a part of his Rocye Gracie Southeast Asia Tour 2009.

The 42-year-old Gracie will have a brief seminar about the sport on Nov. 8 at the CJRS MMA Gym, which will be attended by 30 MMA artists from different jiu-jitsu clubs in Cebu City.

“Royce Gracie will be having a seminar purely about Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He will be teaching different drills and moves to promote the sport to,” Universal Reality Combat Championship Cebu promoter Renault Lao told Sun.Star Cebu.

Gracie is one of the seven hall-of-famers in the UFC. He was one of the first inductees to the UFC hall-of-fame along with former nemesis Ken Shamrock in 2003.

Gracie became famous after winning the debut of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in November 12, 1993. He breezed through the tournament beating Savate champion Gerard Gordeau, journeyman boxer Art Jimm-erson and Pancrase master Shamrock in the finals. He won all of the three fights by submission.

Gracie also came out the champion of UFC 2 and UFC 4. He holds the record of the most submissions in the UFC, with 11.

The seminar this Saturday kicks off at 10 a.m., after a press conference at 12:30 a.m. at the Bistro Ecila at the Ayala Terraces.

This event is made possible by URCC in cooperation with Deftac Cebu – CJRS Gym, Loft Restaurant and Lounge, and the Bistro Ecila.

Gracie will visit Manila on Nov. 7 before coming to Cebu City.

Then he will be flying to Davao City for his last stopover the following day.
