‘Non-runners can help’

TO UNDERSCORE their intent to raise funds for their outreach programs, the organizers of this Sunday’s Aboitiz Race to Reduce Challenge at the Sugbu, South Road Properties, are giving the non-runners a chance to help.

Aboitiz external communications manager Theresa Gonzales said they are encouraging everyone to take part in the event. Those who can’t run can still do their share in helping raise funds by pledging a certain amount on a runner.

This is one way of encouraging their employees, especially the non-runners.

“If they can’t take part of the race as runners, they can be part of the cause by signing pledges,” Gonzales said.

The main beneficiary for this event is Aboitiz’s environmental sustainability campaign.

The organizers are also encouraging runners to be more conscious of their environment when they take part in this Sunday’s run.

The race will also have an early start following the clamor of the running community.

The 21K will start as early as 5:15 a.m. so it will not be too hot for the runners.

The 10K participants will be released at 5:30 a.m. and the 3K and 5K at 5:45 a.m.

The race expects to draw thousands of runners because the event gives the runners more reasons to help the environment.

One tree will be planted in the name of each runner in the nationwide Aboitiz Group tree-planting activity this October.

All finishers will be given a five-minute massage from 20 visually impaired masseurs of the Department of Social Welfare and Development and will have their names and times printed in the local dailies.

“All participants will also have a chance to win three roundtrip air tickets and dinner gift certificates,” working committee head Jovy Tan said.

The race will be using timing chips for the 21K and 10K categories. The registration fee for the 21K is P450, 10K is P350, 3K and 5K is P250. Employees of the Aboitiz Group will pay only P200.

Late registrants will have to pay an additional P50. The registration centers are at the Columbia Sportswear at the SM Northwing, Casa Ilongga and the PSC office at the Cebu City Sports Center. The distribution of singlets will be at the Persimon in Mabolo starting today.
