Pork’s end-A A +A
Friday, August 23, 2013
FIFTEEN senators have expressed support for the abolition of the multi-billion-peso Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), more popularly known as the pork barrel.
Earlier, Sens. Francis Escudero and Alan Peter Cayetano filed separate resolutions seeking the scrapping of the pork barrel.
It seems the pork barrel’s end is near.
The senators who backed the pork barrels abolition, aside from Escudero and Cayetano, are Ralph Recto, Gregorio Honasan, Teofisto Guingona III, Aquilino Pimentel III, Loren Legarda, Grace Poe, Juan Edgardo Angara, Ramon Revilla Jr. and Benigno Aquino IV, Vicente Sotto III and JV Ejercito.
Senate President Franklin Drilon also supported the abolition of the pork barrel, while Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago wants a three-year phaseout of the congressional pork.
Recto and Honasan also want the abolition of the discretionary funds of the executive branch.
Calls for the abolition of the pork barrel snowballed after the reported P10-billion pork barrel scam, with pork from five senators and 23 congressmen being siphoned by bogus NGOs linked to Janet Lim-Napoles and ended up in ghost projects and recipients.
Those who opposed the pork barrel is mounting a public gathering called the “Million People March to Luneta” on Aug. 26 in Rizal Park in Manila and other parts of the country.
To show they got beef with the pork barrel, they use the slogan, “Makibaka. Wag magbaboy.”
Do you have an idea of how much P10 billion is? An Inquirer illustration said it’s equivalent to 8,000 classrooms in two-story buildings.
Its ghost recipients were simply taken from the published list of those who passed the bar and board exams. The people behind the P10-billion pork barrel scam don’t even have a heart for flunkers.
As Sen. Escudero said, “The PDAF has already mutated into a multibillion racket.”
