Napoles-A A +A
Saturday, August 31, 2013
ALL this brouhaha about why Napoles is being accorded special treatment is pretentious beyond belief. I don’t think any of the people raising objections to Napoles’ alleged special treatment are actually clueless. They are simply nitpicking at the administration and trying to get a rise out of the population.
Do you need to be a genius to know why Napoles is being secured by no less than the highest official of the land? Unless you’ve been living in a cave in the last 30 days, you probably know about the one million march last Monday. You probably know about the outrage over the P10 billion pork barrel scam. You probably are not as innocent of the facts as you mercilessly and maliciously throw brickbat after brickbat at the government’s efforts to secure Napoles’ life.
Let’s face it. Not all fugitives are created equal. Some fugitives are best found dead. Well, not Napoles. She is of greater value alive. But obviously, not everyone feels the same way. Some people, some of whom may be powerful members of Congress, may not want her alive, singing away the names of all her cohorts in this billion peso scam.
I do not believe Napoles pretends when she says she fears for her life. Her fears, after all, are not unfounded. Many powerful men and women have profited from patronage politics for many decades. It’s not just Napoles or the people she will probably implicate.
There are scores others who operate similar scams with their own versions of Janet Napoleses.
The government is receiving so much flak for protecting Napoles and securing her life like a VIP that it almost makes me puke. The woman holds the key to the biggest pork barrel scandal in our country. Let’s stop pretending not to know the value of Napoles.
Why pre-empt this administration by saying that Napoles’ surrender to the president is indicative that no members of the Aquino administration will be implicated? Can we wait, see and hear what Napoles has to say? But in the meantime, can we ensure her safety and sanity while in the custody of the government?
Why does she require special treatment? It’s a no-brainer that her life as well as the information she holds is of great value to the country. Let’s stop pretending not to understand the issue at hand. According her special treatment doesn’t make her a star or a saint. It doesn’t free her of wrongdoing either.
Let’s call a spade a spade. She has valuable testimony to give. She stands to implicate many powerful members of government in this country. She stands to influence the results of the 2016 elections. She stands to change the course of political history in the Philippines.
Janet Napoles may come out guilty as hell. But can we afford to see her die? Can we afford to let her carry to the grave the information she holds which stands to expose the powerful figures behind institutionalized corruption running unabated for decades in this country?
And you still ask why Janet Napoles requires special treatment? Janet Napoles whether hero or villain, must at all costs, stay alive. The singing hasn’t even started.
