Pork is evil?-A A +A
Tuesday, September 24, 2013
RETIRED Chief Justice Reynato Puno has lashed out at the P10-billion pork barrel scam, denouncing the pork barrel system as an “evil” that people should fight to abolish.
“The pork barrel is an evil practice and it is our duty to fight evil by engaging it and not running away from it, not escaping from it,” he said.
Pork is the new face of evil.
But what does it make of politicians who made oodles of money from pork barrel funds and Janet Lim-Napoles, the suspected brains behind the P10-billion pork barrel scam?
The retired chief justice called on the people to fight the pork barrel to the end.
He said, “The fight against evil requires that we not only start the fight but we finish the fight. The fight against evil demands a period. The fight cannot be postponed by a comma, cannot be suspended by a ceasefire. Evil deserves but one end—defeat.”
I have strong apprehensions calling the pork barrel evil would only give it more strength and render it undefeatable.
The pork barrel will survive and you’ll find it in next year’s annual national budget.
President Noynoy Aquino III and fellow respondents in the pork barrel case have asked the Supreme Court to junk petitions seeking to have the pork barrel system declared as unconstitutional, saying “reforms are already underway.”
The Office of the Solicitor General also urged the SC to lift the TRO on the PDAF in 2013 as TRO would “work to the damage of innocent citizens who rely on the operations of the PDAF for educational and medical assistance purposes.”
Some P12.27 billion in PDAF for the second semester of 2013 could not be released due to the TRO.
Who likes frozen pork? But surely, as the Bard aptly put it, “There is some soul of goodness in things evil, / Would men observingly distil it out.”
