Mudslinging in the Senate-A A +A
Saturday, December 7, 2013
TWO senators of the republic have engaged in mudslinging lately inside the august halls of the Senate.
Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile delivered a privilege speech that reads line Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago’s psychiatric record. This was followed a week later with Santiago’s privilege speech that reads like Enrile’s criminal record.
Now that they have identified each other, perhaps they can do their job as legislators.
Sen. Chiz Escudero’s sponsorship of the 2014 budget had to wait in line until after the privilege speeches of Enrile and Santiago.
Senator Sergio Osmeña III said the mudslinging among fellow senators was “a waste of time.” But he said the senators were also providing some entertainment.
It seems Senator Enrile is taking the whole thing in stride. He said, “Let me say this. The Senate is great entertainment. Nag-enjoy lahat kayo. Alam ko yon.”
First they wanted to become senators. Now they want to become entertainers too.
Remember, Senator Enrile’s campaign slogan was, “Gusto ko, happy ka.”
But Osmeña and Sen. Tito Sotto said the wrangling, lack of decorum and un-parliamentary language in the Senate were also “hurting” the image of the chamber.
“When the scholars of the future look into the records of the journal, the 16th Congress will not be having such a good reputation,” said Sotto.
“You want to keep a dignified Senate,” Osmeña said.
Good. Remember, in ancient Rome, it was in the Senate where Julius Caesar was
murdered, by senators, of course.
Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, the “Pacman,” had a problem with the taxman when the Bureau of Internal Revenue froze all his bank deposits because of his P2.2-billion tax case.
Valenzuela Rep. Magtanggol Gunigundo came to the defense of Pacman, who is also a Sarangani congressman.
He wants a law passed exempting Pacman from paying income taxes for the rest of his life. Problem solved.
