‘Unlimited vacation’

A HANDFUL of US businesses have adopted “unlimited vacation” policies in which workers need not formally declare their hours of work and no one keeps track of time off, an AFP report said.

Workers can also easily take a three-day weekend.

But that couldn’t beat the work hours in the Philippines where some workers, especially in government, think that break time is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Unlimited vacation policies have been embraced by both workers and their employers, who say the flexibility increases profitability.

It works in companies where the physical presence of workers is not required. All that is required is the job gets done.

Probably unlimited vacation also works for lawmakers who were involved in the P10-billion pork barrel scam, that is, unlimited vacation from their political office.

It’s relatively easy to fire workers in the US. That’s probably the reason workers have to do their job well or they’re fired.

All a manager has to do is tell the non-performing worker to “get out.”

That could be the source of the Cebuano word for a dismissed worker, “nagirawot.”

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has scrapped the special allotment release orders (Saros) which were faked last year as part of what it called a “well-established and highly coordinated racket.”

Agencies may now release funds on the first working day of the year after the budget was approved.

No more Saro gang? What comes next when release of funds was made easy?

Malacañang is seeking a consensus on the proposal to ban firecrackers as firecracker-related injuries increased during the New Year.

It’s easy to ban firecrackers. But who’ll implement the ban?

There’s a firecrackers ban in Davao City. Residents have to drive to the next town to explode firecrackers.
