Editorial: For a successful fiesta

TROPICAL depression Agaton is not expected to become a typhoon. That’s the one reassuring statement issued by the weather bureau Pagasa after the erstwhile low pressure area (LPA) strengthened a bit when it neared Mindanao land, specifically the Surigao provinces.

As an LPA, the weather disturbance brought heavy rainfall on parts of Mindanao and continuous light to moderate rainfall in Cebu that lasted for days, affecting the initial phases of the celebration of the feast of the Sto. Niño.

Because it is moving slowly at five kilometers per hour, Agaton will still be in the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) today, when the procession is held, and tomorrow during the Sinulog Grand Parade.

Pagasa expects Agaton to make landfall this afternoon in Surigao del Sur. When weather disturbances like this hit land, they usually weaken. Hopefully, it will no longer dump more water in Cebu today and tomorrow so we can celebrate the fiesta with the least hassle.

But even if the weather cooperates, threats to law and order may still be there. That is why vigilance should not be lowered.

Cebu City can be said to be bursting at the seams with guests and visitors. Hotels and pension houses are full. Sto. Niño devotees are flocking to the city from the province and neighboring areas. And the fiestas main crowd-drawing activities are held this weekend.

That means the hands of law enforcers are full and cooperation is needed so order will be maintained during the festivities.

The police have already imposed a gun ban and are encouraging people not to drink liquor during the festivities. It is also good to obey the instructions of crowd control people so the holding of activities like the procession and Sinulog street dancing would be generally orderly.

Be aware also of criminals who may blend with the crowd while finding ways to strike. If you notice threats to the successful celebration of the fiesta, report immediately to proper authorities.

Today and tomorrow, we pray for good weather despite Agaton and hope for a generally orderly even if boisterous celebration of Fiesta Señor 2014.
