WHETHER said in fondness or in levity, the phrase “Iskolar ng Bayan” strikes far and deep in meaning and commitment--that because of their state-funded education, UP alumni should pay back or forward.

For the “Tatak UP Awards,” for instance, impeccable credentials and achievements are not just about self; more importantly, a proof of social conscience. Last week, 20 awardees got the Oblation statuette from the UP Alumni Association Cebu chapter upon recommendation from the Search and Awards Committee.

Composed of Gerry Sta. Ana (representing business and entrepreneurship), Dr. Romero Villar (health and medicine), educators Dr. Araceli Almase (science and technology), Dr. Madrilena de la Cerna (arts and culture) and this writer (media and communication and human resources development) as chair, the Committee gave these citations:
In Arts, Design and Culture are Dr. Erlinda Kintanar-Alburo, Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu, Jose “JV” Villacin, Errol Marabiles and Mariano Vidal.

Dr. Erlinda Alburo is a contemporary scholar and advocate of Cebuano language and literature. As director of the Cebuano Studies Center for 15 years, she consistently worked to advance heritage studies in Cebuano culture. Both writer and editor, she has published two compilations of purely indigenous terms--Dictionary of Cebuano Arts (2006) and Dictionary of Bisayan Arts (2009).

A conscientious researcher of Cebuano language and literature, Dr. Yu has advanced
studies and publications of lesser known local writers and organized the Carcar Lecture Series, which showcased 14 writers of Carcar. She actively organizes writing workshops to nurture budding writers, and she writes poetry and fiction dwelling on women’s issues.

Jose “JV” Villacin Jr. has mounted eight major solo art exhibitions and serves on the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, representing Central Visayas in the Committee on Visual Arts. At UP Cebu, he has dedicated over 20 years of his life nurturing the next generation of artists.

Errol Marabiles is a painter, sculptor, poet, lead vocalist, disc jockey, music composer, television host, designer and entrepreneur. Televiewers fondly call him “Budoy” after his long-running program featuring local art and remember his compositions “Maligo Na Jam,” “Budoy Ako,” “Ako si M-16,” “Buwad-Suka-Sili” and “Original Sigbin.”

Mariano Vidal, a painter, has dedicated a good portion of his career to teaching in the UP Cebu Fine Arts Program, and giving private tutorials to or mentoring Cebu’s young talents, including internationally acclaimed Kenneth Cobonpue and Monique Lhuillier. His three decades of solo and group exhibitions have sent his works into the collections of recognized national and international galleries and private collectors.

For Education, Dr. Sofia Aliño Logarta is the sole awardee. Involved in the UP Teacher Training Program since 1996, she shared her expertise in different parts of the Visayas and Mindanao. Her advocacy in the women’s movement led to her researches on “Women in the Cebu Labor Movement in the 1970’s and the 1980’s,” and “Gender in the Curriculum for Teacher Training.” She also serves in Legal Alternatives for Women (Law Inc.)

The other awardees in tomorrow’s column.
