P-Noy’s visit

-A A +A

“God decided to visit the earth, so he sent an angel to survey the situation prior to his visit. The angel returned with his report: ‘Most of them lack food,’ he said, ‘and most of them lack employment.’ God said, ‘Then I shall become incarnate in the form of food for the hungry and work for the unemployed.’”

-- From “The Song of the Bird” by Anthony de Mello

A PRESIDENT’S visit to a locality, more possible than God’s earth visit, is preceded by pretty much the same fact-digging: How are they down there?

President Aquino, scheduled in Cebu tomorrow, didn’t send an angel but reports from national agencies must have told him what he needs to know.

P-Noy is coming for the local celebration of the 28th year of Edsa, a recognition of Cebu’s role in the revolt.

(Which is not much really. Not even a province-wide effort, just a few Carmelite nuns who offered their convent as a safe house for would-be president Corazon Aquino, his mom, until power was securely wrested in Manila. Circumstantial and incidental; no tanks and cannons to face. Still, Cebu must be grateful for Malacañang’s decision to let Cebu in on the traditionally Manila ritual.)

It’s the twin item of the trip that should interest us more. Many of us chided his failure to visit Cebu north towns that were as badly battered as other places in super storm Yolanda’s path.

Symbolic

P-Noy must already know the Cebu situation. But like any other part of the country that looks up to its President for assurance and hope, we view his coming as more symbolic than anything else.

But Cebu won’t mind if he’ll bring food and jobs as well.
