Minors as wreckers?

-A A +A

Saturday, March 8, 2014

Labor officials intervened in the demolition of houses in Barangay Apas, Cebu City after learning there were minors in the wrecking crew.

We’ve heard of minors being used by criminal syndicates as drug couriers because a law shields them from criminal liability.

But a minor under a court sheriff’s employ? It could never be par for the course.

There were reports of looting in some of houses being demolished in Barangay Apas. As a resident aptly put it, “It was painful. First our house got demolished, then someone stole from us.”

Members of the demolition crew may have thought they were marauders in ancient wars out to pillage and plunder.

Someone should remind them there are no spoils in enforcing a court order.

Cebu City Regional Trial Court Executive Judge Soliver Peras of Branch 10 has ordered a “ceasefire” in the demolition of homes in Barangay Apas.

When a ceasefire is declared in a war, hostilities are effectively stopped. So, that means there’d be no demolition for now.

Residents can only hope the ceasefire holds.

The Cebu City Government has shown some interest in the fate of the Barangay Apas residents, sending its lawyers to intervene in the case.

City Hall itself has some demolition to do to enforce easement on creeks, rivers and those living in danger zones.

This is something quite interesting.

There are still so many squatters in Cebu City. But they’re no longer called squatters. They now go by the term informal settlers.

They still don’t own the land on which they built their homes.

But their vocabulary has improved.
