Senate wouldn’t fall with Napoles

-A A +A

THE Senate had tiptoed on the question of whether to force Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and pork barrel fraud "queen" Janet Napoles to release the list of people linked to the scandal. When Blue Ribbon committee chief TJ Guingona finally decided yesterday, it was after much hand-wringing.

While the Senate is known for being reckless with other people's reputation, it is cautious about its own or its members' honor. Did you see how gingerly it handled the pitch battle between Sens. Juan Ponce Enrile and Miriam Santiago?

Former senator Ping Lacson warns of a threat to national security that might lead to a
"collapse" of the Senate.

He may be exaggerating, not the number of senators bribed by Napoles but the depth of the plunge in Senate credibility. Trust is an X quantity that the nation, used to the assault of disclosures about corruption of its public officials, could bear.

I don't know but the country's institutions were roundly battered before and they held up. Many people thought the Supreme Court, which reeled and was about to keel over with the removal of its chief justice, couldn't survive. Well, it's still standing and disrespect for it is pretty much the same.

Fear

Lacson's warning is about abstract fear of a disaster which might not happen, something that most Pinoys, absorbed in their private and personal woes, might not take to heart or mind.

The names of the alleged culprits can come out, as the Senate allowed in many other
past revelations, which were made with much less evidence.

The Senate, much more the heavens, would not fall.
