Losing sleep over Napolist

-A A +A

“Isang linggo akong di nakatulog...”
--JV Ejercito

“I sleep soundly at night. Nakatulog ako nine hours.”
--Juan Ponce Enrile

WHAT do JV Ejercito and Juan Ponce Enrile have in common? They're both senators and they're both in Janet Napoles's list of lawmakers and government officials in the pork barrel scandal.

But there's a lot of difference between them. JPE is 90, JV is 44. JPE is a veteran of many crises and deep pain, JV is much less experienced in dealing with life's afflictions. And JPE allegedly pocketed a lot more kickbacks than JV.

Which must explain why JPE hasn't been losing sleep over the Napoles list while JV couldn't sleep for a week because of it. (JV has already been de-listed by Janet who admits an error of "decoding" and he must now sleep soundly.)

They could be giving half-truths though. As sleeplessness is associated with a restive conscience, JPE's like-a-baby sleep is supposed to tell the public he's innocent. And JV's one-week sleeplessness would suggest he values highly his good name.

They might not be telling us everything.

JPE, with a reputed sharp mind, could be spending the wee hours plotting how to avoid the infamy of being jailed and the wrecking his legacy. JV, who's still a rising star, could be hounded at dawn by doubts about survival of his career.

Misery

Not being able to sleep is terrible, Lynn Johnston said. "You have the misery of having partied all night -- without the fun."

If it's any comfort, many other would-be accused politicians and bureaucrats have been sleepless too.
