THE Black Pearl is a fictional ship in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series, including, “The Curse of the Black Pearl.”

It is also the name of the security agency the Cebu Capitol hired to secure Capitol premises and other province-owned buildings, facilities and properties.

But a series of controversies hounded the hiring of the security agency it might as well be the Capitol’s curse of the “Black Pearl.”

Black Pearl Security Agency posted security guards who have no guns at the Capitol and the Cebu South Bus Terminal and even before it was given the notice of award by the bids and awards committee.

The scene must have been viewed with amusement by advocates of a “gunless society.”

But can you imagine guards without guns? Are we in Malapascua Island?

The Black Pearl owner said the security agency has enough firearms for its existing security guns, denying reports of gunless security guards.

True enough, one of its armed guards posted at a province-owned property in Barangay Apas, Cebu City “accidentally” fired his shotgun and hit a “habal-habal”driver in Barangay Apas, Cebu City Wednesday morning.

Now, would you rather have unarmed security guards?

Cebu Gov. Junjun Davide lost no time, actually after some harsh comments in media, in terminating Black Pearl’s temporary engagement.

"In light with the recent incidents involving a security guard from Black Pearl Security Agency, I decided to terminate the temporary engagement of Black Pearl at the Capitol and other facilities in the provincial government," he said.

Davide said the accidental shooting incident “was a blessing in disguise” would now be the basis for the review of the post-qualification of Black Pearl.

Indeed, it was a blessing for him to rid the Capitol of the curse of the Black Pearl.
