INITIAL assessment following the opening of classes says that there is a mismatch between teachers and pupils--that is, there are more pupils than there are teachers.

There are 1.5 million young people wanting to be taught, and an additional 3,500 teachers are needed.

The Department Of Education (DepEd) in Central Visayas is even waiting for more enrollees “from the Special Education (Sped) classes and from the Alternative Learning System (ALS). Thus, the DepEd 7 is speeding up the hiring of more teachers.

Some schools, such as those in Naga and Danao ci­ties, have been ex­ten­ded the au­thority to hire tea­chers who will be paid from local go­vernment unit (LGU) funds.

The partial list that DepEd 7 released re­cent­­ly totaled 1,572,648 en­rol­led in the region’s public schools. Of this number, 136,295 are in kindergarten, while more than one million are in the elementary level.

In secondary school, almost half a million students have been enrolled. But on the whole, the initial report is that there is a mark decline in the number of enrollees in 2014 in all levels compared with the previous year, 2013.

Why? The easiest response is that right now the list is not yet complete. As DepEd 7 earlier pointed out, additional enrollees from Sped and ALS are still being awaited.

And so, nationwide, there is the possibility that the number of students this year would either equal or top that of the list of the preceding year.

Either way, the point is that more teachers need to be hired if DepEd 7 were to meet the demands for more mentors this year.

The estimated number of new teachers needed is 3,500. The funds needed for their salaries and the cost of maintenance and facilities so they could function effectively and perform efficiently would certainly be tremendous.

I should say that the burden of up-scaling the nation’s capability to meet the challenge of this year’s education would be further aggravated when the new educational system that adds more years for the students to finish the primary and secondary levels is in place.

There are at least, 19 school divisions in Central Visayas. The Cebu division has the most number of enrollees in the kindergarten, elementary and secondary levels with a total population of 482,507. This is followed by the Bohol Provincial School Division with some 264,608 students.

This data is from the public school. The provinces are still checking the lists from the private schools.

Private schools have reportedly something like 219,000 students in all levels in Central Visayas, indicating the possibility that the private sector may also need to hire more teachers. Right now, public schools in the region has already of 44,000 teachers.

Indeed, the matching of teachers with the needs of the student population in order to have quality education for our students should be the top priority in our 2014 school education program.
