Killing doctors

-A A +A

Friday, July 25, 2014

A 71-year-old wheelchair-bound patient shot dead his doctor inside a clinic in a private hospital in Cebu City before shooting himself in the head Thursday morning.

Dr. Cris Cecil Chan Abbu, 56, an orthopedic surgeon, was shot in the chest and arm by Wilfred Sabonsolin, a former seaman he had been treating for spinal problems.

Doctors don’t live by the gun, by the scalpel perhaps. But the scalpel is no match to the gun.

Doctors help save lives. Some doctors I know, like Dr. Wyben Briones, even go to far-flung places to help victims of earthquakes and typhoons or lead a larvicide drive to get rid of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Who’d think a doctor will find himself at the other end of the gun?

How ironic. It’s chilling to know that people who don’t live by the gun often get shot by those who do.

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, a good shot (according to her) who hits politicians like her at every turn, once shared the story of a politician who went to the doctor.

“Doc,” the politician said, “every time I receive my pork barrel, I want to steal it.

But afterwards, I feel guilty and get depressed.”

“Well, I can help you so you won’t steal your pork barrel,” the doctor said.

“No doc, help me so I won’t feel guilty and get depressed,” the politician said.

Acting Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella wants stricter security measures in hospitals to prevent a repeat of the shooting of a doctor although guns are the least expected in hospitals.

But you’ll never know. Perhaps some patients need psychiatric evaluation, like those applicants for gun licenses.

Test them whether something in their brains snaps when they see the bill.
