What would make PNoy cha-cha any better?

-A A +A

PRESIDENT Aquino, in a major reversal of his stand against amending the Constitution, now says he's open to it.

He's ready for the cha-cha (charter change), which led past presidents to fall in their faces.

Fidel Ramos stumbled with his Pirma and People's Initiative; Joseph Estrada slid with his Concord (Constitutional Correction for Development); and Gloria Arroyo skidded with Concord, consultative commission and Sigaw ng Bayan, along with two House speakers who twirled on two left feet.

Why did these efforts, which would be funny if they really just involved the art of the dance, fail totally?

Because they were seen by the people as self-serving: the presidents, though not equally candid about their intention, wanted to extend their stay in Malacañang.

Because even if there were excuses (shift to parliamentary system, economic reforms), real intent was to prolong their hold on power.

PNoy's motive is unadulterated hate of the Supreme Court. Apparently still smarting from its thrashing of his pork barrel, PNoy wants to amend the Constitution to clip the high tribunal's powers.

Not content with his verbal sniping at the SC, he now wants the fundamental law overhauled.

He doesn't tell us how but, given his rage over the DAP ruling, he must want an SC that wouldn't mess with the executive department, a court that wouldn't rule against Malacañang.

No different

It would also help if, aside from taming the SC, he'd have the chance to seek another six years in office.

PNoy is different from the other presidents? Not about not letting go.
