‘Crazy’ gun-toting Flora in the Palace-A A +A

“The statistics on sanity are that one of every four persons is suffering from a mental illness. Look at your three best friends. If they’re OK, it must be you.”
--Rita Mae Brown, American novelist and screenwriter
FLORA PINEDA, the woman who carried a handgun into Malacañang Friday (Aug. 22) but was stopped at the gate near the executive building, was asked if she was mentally unhinged. She said yes.
But being crazy, Flora said, "is no reason for me not to tell the government what the poor are going through and more people are growing hungry." She was nuts all right: she didn't fire the gun.
A .45 cal. M1911 pistol she had "borrowed" from her brother, a Marine, was loaded but she said she wouldn't harm anyone. She just wanted to scare President Aquino into resigning over poverty and hunger in the country.
PNoy would even amend the Constitution to seek a second term and this woman would have him quit? Hello, as PNoy loves to say.
But crackpots can pull a propaganda coup where activists and insurgents often fail. Look at effigies of presidents that mainstream protesters year after year produce in grotesque images and burn. Flora got more attention.
She did something novel that only the bizarre mind could concoct: walk into Malacañang with a loaded gun and lecture presidential guards about people having no food and no roof over their heads.
She didn't hurt anyone, except the PSG's fragile ego and PNoy's DAP-tainted image. And Flora didn't even wave stats, how many of the populace survive on little or nothing.
