Policemen tricked me, suspected gunman says

TWO weeks after his arrest, the alleged gunman in the killing of hotelier Manuel Ting talked to the media about what he described as a “ridiculous” arrest.

“Bugal-bugal man tong ilang gihimo sa akoa,” Ruel Velez, 44, of Barangay Ocaña, Carcar City, Cebu said in an interview with reporters at the stockade of the Cebu City Police Office yesterday.

Velez, who was very careful in answering the questions of reporters, saying he did not seek clearance from his lawyer, said he was glad a female witness came out to say he was not the gunman.

“Lipay kaayo ko ana, uy (I’m happy about that),” Velez said.

He is optimistic that the statement of the woman, who was interviewed by Super Radyo dySS reporter and Sun.Star Superbalita correspondent Guam Logroño last Saturday, will help clear his name in the killing of Ting last June 22.

The woman, however, told Logroño she will not issue a sworn statement.
