LAST year’s movers and shakers in Cebu sports will be recognized in the 28th Sportswriters Association of Cebu and San Miguel Corp. Cebu Sports Awards on March 9 at 6:30 p.m. the Casino Español de Cebu.

Among the major awardees for 2009 are a Manduae City-based billiards player who made her mark in world pool, the two Cebu teams that swept the Nestea Beach Volleyball title and an up-and-coming high school basketball player.

Rubilen Amit, who won the women’s 10-ball championships and teamed up with Efren Reyes to win the World 10-ball mixed doubles title, is the major awardee for billiards, while the University of San Jose-Recoletos and the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USPF) get cited for sweeping the Nestea Beach Volleyball national title.

Mark Javen Tallo, who was named the MVP in the Jr. NBA Camp, also leads the awardees in basketball.

“This will be the 28th year when SAC and SMC have jointly honored the year’s top sports personalities. This is a major event in Cebu sports. Many I’ve interviewed consider the award one of the highlights of their career. We will make sure that March 9, 2010 will be an unforgettable evening for our outstanding Cebuano athletes,” said
SAC president John Pages.

The other major awardees are Daniel Noval (athletics), MLKP-Cebu City Niños (basketball) Jomar Jumapao (bowling), Z Gorres, Rodel Mayol, Donnie Nietes, Johnreil Casimero (boxing), Team Cebu City, Edward Hayco, Charlea Lagaras (dancesport), Irina Gabasa (golf) Deftac Cebu (mixed-martial arts) Mary Grace De los Santos (running), Loren Dale Echavez, Bea Roble (swimming), Jessica Jawad-Honoridez, (table tennis) Shaneen Sia (taekwondo), Noy Jopson, (triathlon), Catmon USPF high and school, (volleyball).

The major awardees are all candidates for the Athlete of the Year award.
