Road mishap kills truck boy

A WAYWARD car fell off the highway after hitting the center island at the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) yesterday dawn, injuring two persons.

SPO4 Henry Obiso, Talisay City traffic police chief, identified those hurt as Jonathan Edward Rafanan, 19, of Cebu City and Jessel Pastelero of Naga, Cebu.

Rafanan and Pastelero were rushed to a hospital in Cebu City because of injuries in the ribs and legs.

The two were on their way to Cebu City on board a Honda Civic bearing plate number WGV-444 driven by Rafanan.

Obiso said the car had just passed by a gas station along the CSCR around 1:30 a.m. when Rafanan failed to control the steering wheel; the car eventually slammed into the concrete center barrier.

Fast

Obiso believed that Rafanan was driving fast because the car rolled and fell off the highway after hitting the center island. The impact wrecked the vehicle’s front part.

It ended up turning upside down off the CSCR.

Obiso could not say if Rafanan was under the influence of liquor when he drove the car, which came from Naga, Cebu.

The two were reportedly in stable condition at Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City.

A private towing firm finally pulled the vehicle out shortly before noon yesterday.

Meanwhile, a truck boy was killed after falling from the top of a cargo truck while it was running on the highway of Carcar town Friday night.

Michael Lastimosa, 20, who hails from Barangay Uling, Naga, was on top of a load of firewood when his neck got caught in a tree branch that was sticking out on the road of Sitio Baha-baha, Barangay Liburon, Carcar.

Lastimosa was with another truck boy, Mark Anthony dela Cerna, and they were both on top of the load of firewood, near the front part of the truck.

The cargo truck was driven by Reggie Labajo and was headed for a noodle factory owned by Feliz Cabusas. The wood was to be used in heating the noodles.

Run over

On the way, the accident happened, causing Lastimosa to fall to the side of the truck past 11 p.m.

As he was down on the ground, his head got run over by the right rear tire of the cargo truck.

Labajo and truck owner Cabusas rushed Lastimosa to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police only learned about the incident yesterday morning, as Labajo and Cabusas had no time to report the accident because they immediately attended to Lastimosa.

There were many rumors among residents about how Lastimosa died, some versions quite gruesome, but police disproved these claims. (With MEA)
